Inclusion
Recreation inclusion is an important option and choice for meeting the leisure needs of individuals with disabilities. Inclusion provides a person with a disability the opportunity to be included or “mainstreamed” in park district or recreation department programs as they participate alongside their nondisabled peers. The professional staff at NEDSRA works closely with member partner staff, the participant and family to provide an enriching recreational experience in the least restrictive environment. Inclusion assistance is available free to all NEDSRA residents.
Inclusion assistance is an integral part of the success process and may include:
- Training/orientations for member partner staff
- Lending adaptive equipment for recreation programs
- Observations and evaluations for recreation programs
- Resource materials
- Securing specialty staff such as a signing assistant
- Providing a leisure buddy at the program to assist with inclusion
- One-to-one consultation
